About the book

Karen had a pointy voice and a frown upon her face. She thought the world should follow the rules she made for every place. At lunch she wrinkles her nose at a classmate’s curry rice, tells Mae her beaded braids are “too much,” and runs to a grown-up when a skateboarder rolls past the library door.

Then a caring teacher kneels beside her and asks her to pause and take a breath. Karen begins to notice the feelings tucked inside the kids around her, apologizes one by one, and learns that caring doesn’t mean demanding your own way.

Told in warm rhyme, Karen Learns to Care gives children language for privilege, empathy, and repair, and a simple question to carry with them: “Is it kind? Is it fair?”

“

Privilege is being sure
Those in charge will agree.
Privilege is thinking what feels normal
Must be right for everybody.
